Rufous Hummingbird
The Rufous Hummingbird is one of North America’s most spectacular birds. The amazing thing about it is that it is only 3 1/2 inches long (8-9cm). Wow.
If you live in the Northwest of the United States the Rufous Hummingbird is common in the summertime. I notice it most often when it comes to hummingbird feeders. It usually establishes dominance at feeders even if it is passing through for only a short time!
The scientific name is Selasphorus rufus.
This gregarious little bird is also often found in the east, more than any other common western USA species of hummingbird.
These guys really are amazing to see coming in to a feeder and to see in flight displays. They act like they are 100 times bigger than they are and aren’t hardly afraid of a thing! I have been buzzed by these guys and had them try to scare me away from feeders that I was trying to refill many times!
