Grand Tetons and a Mallard

The Grand Tetons abounds with wildlife. On my last visit I found this very picturesque female Mallard looking for her breakfast right next to a reflection of a Tetons themselves.

This picture wasn’t planned and actually turned out to be quite lucky. I was walking back from where I had been photographing the sunrise and saw the duck slowly swimming up and down the waterway. I framed what I hoped would be a great shot and waited and waited for the duck to swim to a pleasing position. The light initially I thought was a total bust, but it did shine through in quite an interesting way, so I am really pleased with this unexpected image.

This trip as I look back on the images I took turned out to be very fruitful despite the crazy weather that I experienced in just a short period of time. Here, here, and here are some other images from the trip.

Green River Overlook, Canyonlands National Park

Green River Overlook in Canyonlands National Park is amazing. In fact this national park in southern Utah that is so often overlooked is one of my favorite national parks I have visited. You can go there and be troubled by only a few other people at almost any location at almost any time. There is one exception to that and that is Mesa Arch, but that is only one place of hundreds that you can head to in Canyonlands National Park.

I have visited this place often because I really enjoy it, and because I am still trying to capture a photograph that lives up to the memories I have of Canyonlands. I think after sunset in the last light of the day is getting closer to being the type of image I am looking for.

This image as well is more of a panoramic format at an aspect ration of 2:1. I really like this ratio in photographs, and may try and shoot it quite a bit more. I guess we will see. When I shoot I honestly shoot what feels right and the time. That leaves me with photographs in quite a few different formats. I do like the variety that results!

Honestly looking at this photograph from the Green River Overlook makes me want to go there again. I really love being able to overlook huge expanses of nature and feel really tiny!

Subway Panorama, Zion National Park

The Subway in Zion National Park is an amazing place to visit. It is a premier example of the unique geology that can be found in the desert southwest. The Subway is also amazing as an example of the variety of things you can find and see in nature. I personally never would have dreamed of seeing something like this until I actually saw the Subway in person!

I wanted to get all the amazing parts of the Subway into one picture, and I believe this panorama has done a good job. The range of light values is what I like most about this picture, not to mention the range of colors that you can and will see there.

Changing Colors, Grand Teton National Park

2009 was a really odd year for fall colors everywhere I went, especially in Grand Teton National Park. The Grand Tetons are located in the north west area of Wyoming and fall colors here were weird at best in early October. Some areas of aspens had no leaves left on their branches, and looked like January. Others like the stand in this picture, were just barely beginning to change colors.

I really like this image for the thistles details in the foreground and the nice clean lines of the young aspens that are just barely changing colors.

Down the Virgin River, Zion National Park

Some places are magical, and the Narrows in the Virgin River in Zion National Park is one of them. This picture was taken there, late one afternoon in November. It was cold, I was wet, and the light was threatening to disappear completely.

Basically all the things you need for a great time. I wasn’t miserable at all. All the basic ingredients for some magic to happen.

This is an image that just popped into view, and I was more than happy to make it. I love it more each time I see it!

Colors of Zion, The Subway

The Subway in Zion National Park is a classic feature of the desert southwest. It is a unique and very impressive geologic formation. Beyond the geology the Subway glows with a transcendent beauty that speaks to the sacredness of nature, and the world we live in.

This is an image that I consider one of my best of all time. So many things came together to make it happen, and I love it more each time I look at it.

Flowing Time, Subway in Zion National Park

I like the Subway in Zion National Park because of the amazing rock formation, but also because you can see the passage of time right before your eyes. I really like this image because of how time passing is displayed on three levels. You have the water flowing by, and spinning the fallen leaves in the pool. You also have the changing colors that signify the passing of the seasons. Lastly you have the stone walls slowly changing over time.

The flowing moments of time we see occur in small ways all around us. Zion National Park is an incredible place to watch change occur each year, day, and second.

Stone Cascades, Zion National Park

The Left Fork Creek area is an amazing place. It is home to some of Zion’s most amazing sights. As always I try to infuse my personality or what I think makes a place unique into an image. On this trip I was struck by how amazing the patterns were on the stone cascades.

Making this image I decided to make the stone and patterns in the flows of water not only the foreground but the main focus. After setting up the composition, getting an image with the water flowing in the places I wanted took quite few a tries, but it paid off.

Zion Tree and Rock Silhouette

This tree is famous and visited often in the Checkerboard Mesa area of Zion National Park. I like to visit this tree because it is inspiring to see something growing in such a difficult place yet lasting year after year.

The trouble is capturing a unique view. I was here with several other photographers and basically didn’t get much of value. After they had left I was poking around trying to find a nice spot for the next time I was in the area. Then I saw the silhouette against the morning sun lit rocks and new I had what I was looking for without having to come back.

Glowing Walls and Flowing Water, Zion

Some places hold a magical place for people. Zion is one of those places for me. There are also very specific spots in the world that draw me. Zion has several spots that I am almost magnetically drawn to. The image below is one of those very specific spots for me. Every time I have ever been into the narrows I stop here and am taken in by it.

Here the water, green trees, the fiery walls, and the patterns carved into the rock form an image of a place that sings to my heart.
